A message from Bear Cottage

Bear Cottage is a medically supported home away from home providing support and respite for children with terminal illnesses and their families. At Bear Cottage we believe that life, however brief, should be enriched and celebrated so ours is a home full of special moments and cherished memories – a place where life is for living.

Bear Cottage is one of only two hospices in Australia and the only one in NSW. We accept children from all parts of Australia regardless of where they receive their primary care and we offer them the much needed support and comfort they need whilst on their journey.

Families who care for a child with a life-limiting condition often do so 24 hours a day, and for many years. This can be incredibly isolating, and can impact greatly on the emotional, financial and physical wellbeing of a family as a whole. Time spent with us can alleviate these impacts. Parents and siblings are welcome to stay as a family or children can be left unaccompanied, so parents and carers can take a much-needed break. A stay at Bear Cottage is exactly what each family needs it to be.

While staying with us, children receive the best 24-hour medical care delivered by an expert interdisciplinary team. Our play therapists ensure that the needs and interests of all children, regardless of their condition or abilities, are catered for whilst the daily chores, like cooking and cleaning, are attended to by a dedicated team of chefs, housekeepers and volunteers, leaving families to do as much, or as little, as they like.

Our assistance, comfort and support are given freely to any family who needs it however we rely entirely on the generosity of the community to keep our doors open.

Howards Storage World and their customers have been helping to keep the doors open at Bear Cottage since 2004 through the sales of the ‘Mouse for House’, ‘Bag for a Bear’ and most recently the ‘Pocket Pad’ products. The profits from these product sales have enabled us to care for so many precious children and their families and we are so grateful to everyone who has joined us on our journey so far.

At Bear Cottage we promise no happy endings or miracle cures, all we do is provide a little peace today…with your help we’ll continue to do this tomorrow.
